Product Feature: Private Payment

At Cape, we’re dedicated to minimizing the data we collect and store, particularly sensitive information like your payment details. To ensure your financial data remains secure, inaccessible to unauthorized parties (and to us), and decoupled from your mobile activities, your payment information is sent directly to Stripe, and is never seen by or stored in our servers.

How Private Payment Works at Cape

When you sign up for Cape and provide your payment information, we don’t ask for your name or address (because we’re committed to data minimization), and we don’t store your full credit (or other payment) card number or expiry in our systems. Instead, we use Stripe to intentionally split customer data between our payment gateway and Cape’s internal business systems.

Here’s how it works:

1. We use Stripe's SDK on our website and in our mobile app so that your payment information is sent directly to them without ever touching our servers.
2. Stripe stores your payment info, and we only store a link to your Stripe payment information.
3. The Cape app can see some information through Stripe: type of card, last 4 numbers and expiration date. This is surfaced in the app to help you keep track of which card is associated with your Cape subscription.
4. Stripe is PCI DSS level 1 compliant, ensuring your payment data is handled with the utmost security.

Sending your payment information directly to Stripe means that even in the event of a data breach at Cape, your credit card information would be inaccessible, and your payment method can’t be correlated with the rest of your mobile activity. We add another layer of privacy by not collecting your name or address to process payments, ensuring that your personal details are not stored in conjunction with your payment information.
